Fenris asks (in earnest) if the song has a "Doris Day movie" vibe. It doesn't to me; but it's been a while and I only saw a few of hers.
To me, it doesn't matter whether it's Doris Day per se. The song has a feeling about it. Mid-20th Century. The atomic age symbols work. The duet is lovely. They're exchanging thoughts, not glances*.
*When arriving at MIT, students are given a book called "HoToGAMIT" (HOw TO Get Around MIT). There are some practical things, and some MIT culture things, and some...silly things, like the following:
"To be is to do" – Socrates
"To do is to be" – Jean-Paul Sartre
"Do be do be do" – Frank Sinatra
I'm getting off track. Here's the first verse:
I wake in the morning
Think 'bout gravity
How can it measure
In a quantum
Reality
Oof, there's a lot there! I totally relate to having odd thoughts in the morning. But "gravity"? Oho, no, giving the next lines, we're not talking about Isaac Newton. We're talking about General Relativity.
Measuring in a quantum reality? Oh, Fenris, you're far too educated. Measurement disturbs the quantum-mechanics system. Blah blah Schrödinger's cat.
So we're 5 lines in and we've touched on the two great physics discoveries of the 20th century!
Then we hit the theme:
It's a big question
It's one I can't solve
An unanswerable question
Around and around we revolve
Remember that lovely Discovery Channel ad from 2008? The world is a lovely place, full of mystery and potential for learning.
Isaac Newton wrote: "I do not know what I may appear to the world, but to myself I seem to have been only like a boy playing on the sea-shore, and diverting myself in now and then finding a smoother pebble or a prettier shell than ordinary, whilst the great ocean of truth lay all undiscovered before me."
If knowledge is a sphere of understanding, that means as we learn more, the border of what we don't understand (surface of the sphere) grows with it. Unless, for some reason, there's a limit to knowledge, there will always be more unanswerables questions, not fewer. Get used to it!
Some of the famous questions referenced: consciousness; history of consciousness; self; free will; simulated reality; arrow of time; many-worlds theory
But, being a mid TwenCen duet:
Is love just hormonal reaction?
Or are we more than just chemistry?
Damn, Fenris, this time the twist is rationality to love? Okay, I can work with that.
