This is part of The Existential Dreadnik's Scooby Doo series.
The sound matches my memory of that era. (Of music, not Scooby.) To be fair, my 70s music experience was not from the radio. My parents preferred vinyl. (Or reel-to-reel!) I remember the sitter when they went out to see Harry Belafonte in concert. She had a lisp and I was very confused when she told me not to be "shellfish". What's crab got to do with it?
Anyway, until we got to the point where my sister and I figured out that we could listen to Casey Kasem in the church parking lot while waiting for our parents, our exposure to music was limited to corporate Muzak, roller rink hits, neighborhood kids, and whatever local businesses were brave enough to put on the radio instead of paying off the mafia.
But, yeah, I got the vibe. The local grocery store had a marlin on the wall. Blew out my flip flop.
The reason I'm going all-in on the 70s vibe is that Fred Jones would have been the worst 80s character: he dressed like a preppie. He wears an ascot, of all things! He might as well have draped a sweater across his shoulders.
But, dammit, I looked up to Fred. Not as a personal aspiration; oh, no, I was all Shaggy. But Fred was respectable. And he had a van! But he had friends, and honor, and purpose, and he drove the Mystery Machine* where it needed to go.
* Fuck you, Ellison.
Oh, right, I got sidetracked. This is a blog about Fenris
The Mystery Machine is on the road again
Four friends and a dog seeking adventure
The dog says "ruh-ro" but I don't know
'Cause we succeed in every venture
Fred is rather unflappable, considering. Shaggy's paranoid vibes have to wear you down after a while.
Meddling kids? I don't think so
We're crusading groovy youth!
That's Fred in a nutshell. Just keep on truckin' and solve those mysteries!
